Love of beer is understandably the driving force behind many a craft brewery, and that is certainly how Brouwerij Pronck got started. But to deliver outstanding beer batch after batch, month after month, passion for the amber fluid is alone not enough; all aspects of the operation need to evolve in sync. At Pronck, keeping the tanks in tip-top condition is mission-critical, therefore upping their tank cleaning game was on the agenda early on.

In only a few short years, the Dutch craft brewery Pronck has gained a devoted following and is already nothing short of a Leiden institution. And such is the fans’ thirst for Pronck beer that demand keeps outstripping supply, necessitating a constant investment in additional brewing capacity to stay ahead of the curve; Pronck currently brews over 5,000 litres per month, and growing rapidly. Quality of their finished beer is the foremost priority at Pronck and will never be sacrificed in pursuit of volume growth only; therefore, to keep the operations running smoothly while also upholding the strictest quality standards, the growth and evolution of the brewery operation inevitably soon reached a point where the tank cleaning side needed to be raised to the next level.

The four 750-litre and two 1400-litre fermenter tanks at Pronck originally came fitted with static spray head cleaning devices, supplied by the tank manufacturer as part of the package. Static spray heads are simple and relatively inefficient cleaning devices, however, and while they may be enough to get you started they soon show their limitations in any growing brewery operation, and especially with Pronck’s unpasteurised beers where compromising on hygiene is simply not an option. After a particularly challenging operational issue, the cause of which was eventually traced back to inadequate cleaning results of the static spray heads, Pronck decided it was time to look for a more efficient tank cleaning solution that would deliver better and more consistent brewery hygiene.

After considering a number of suppliers, and following extensive discussions with Scanjet at a recent brewing sector exhibition, Pronck concluded that not only was Scanjet’s Bio range of cleaning devices just what they were looking for, but also Scanjet as a supplier was clearly knowledgeable of and experienced in the brewery sector, and responsive to the needs of a growing brewery like Pronck.

Of particular interest to Pronck was Scanjet’s Bio range of rotary spray heads, which are designed for the small-to-medium-sized tanks typically found in craft, artisanal and other similar breweries. The Bio rotary spray heads are engineered to consume the least amount of water while producing the best possible spray coverage and impact force even when operating on relatively low pressures, as a result delivering industry-leading operational efficiency with minimal environmental impact. And unlike other rotary devices which usually rely on a ball-bearing or similar construction, the Scanjet Bio rotary spray heads employ an advanced fluid-bearing design, offering considerably longer service life and reduced maintenance needs. With self-draining and self-cleaning features, the Bio rotary spray heads comply with food and beverage industry hygiene guidelines and are optionally available with 3A and other relevant certificates.

The Bio range consists of three models, the 2SB, 5SB and 7SB. Of these, the mid-sized Bio 5SB was chosen for Pronck, and a test unit was soon delivered to Leiden to be put through its paces. The initial test involved simply running a side-by-side comparison of the Bio 5SB against the existing static device, outside a tank in open view, where the difference became immediately obvious: the Bio 5SB produced a significantly stronger impact and a much more comprehensive spray pattern.

Moving on to actual trial operation, it was noted that the cleaning cycle times were shorter, and the overall operation of the cleaning process was simpler. But most importantly by far, the cleaning outcome proved to be significantly better, which was of course the main reason for upgrading to the Bio 5SB in the first place. The earlier tank cleaning challenges were soon resolved, and in daily operation the results keep getting better with each cleaning cycle.
